CHICAGO - The Public Library Association (PLA) is offering public librarians an opportunity to learn practical skills and knowledge that will help them better manage their libraries’ staffing and human resources needs.

The Strategic HR:  Organization and Personnel Management workshop, is scheduled for April 29-30 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Course instructor Jeanne Goodrich has more than 35 years of experience in public library administration. She is also the co-author of the PLA book “Staffing for Results.” Her latest book, co-authored with consultant Paula Singer, “HR for Results,” was published by ALA in 2007.

Participants in the Strategic HR workshop will learn how to analyze their library's organizational structure to determine suitability for achieving their strategic goals; create recruitment plans that will attract qualified candidates, effectively explain job functions through written job descriptions and select the right person for the job; and choose from among a variety of staff development and retention strategies, based on local needs and requirements.

The two-day workshop is sponsored by PLA in conjunction with the Southern Adirondack Library System. Registration rates are $250 for PLA members and employees of the Arizona State Library Archives & Public Records, $300 for ALA members and $400 for non-members. For the full course description, instructor biography and registration information, visit http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/pla/plaevents/cplacourses/.

Strategic HR is a Certified Public Library Administrator (CPLA) course, and completion of this course can be used as credit toward the CPLA program. This voluntary program is designed for post-MLS public librarians with at least three years of supervisory experience and includes a series of courses, each focused on one aspect of library management. However, you do not need to be enrolled in the CPLA certification program to attend this workshop.
