Joe J. Márquez, Social Sciences and User Experience Librarian for Reed College Library, and Annie Downey, Associate College Librarian and Director of Research Services for Reed College Library, will present “Future of Libraries Fellowship: Developing Library Service Design Heuristics” at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, Saturday June 23, 2018 from 1:00 – 2:00pm in the Morial Convention Center, Room 295.

Selected as the first recipients of the Center for the Future of Libraries’ Fellowship in 2017, Márquez and Downey used the fellowship as an opportunity to expand their library service design heuristics, developing a set of library service design heuristics cards, available as a free download from the Center for the Future of Libraries site. The heuristics grew out from their 2015 article “Service Design: An Introduction to a Holistic Assessment Methodology of Library Services” in Weave: Journal of Library User Experience. With a focus on library service design and usability, the heuristics help professionals across library environments address emerging technologies and services as well as improve traditional library programs, services, and collections.

The session at ALA Annual will explore the development and uses of the heuristics and how the heuristics cards can help reinforce a service design mindset, encourage thinking holistically, and keep the user at the center of new service development.

The Future of Libraries Fellowship provides an individual or group with a stipend of $10,000 to advance new ideas and perspectives for the future of libraries through the creation of a public product – report, white paper, video, resource, tool – that will help library professionals envision the future of library collections, services, spaces, technologies, or partnerships. The announcement of the recipient of the 2018 Fellowship is expected in late June. The Future of Libraries Fellowship is administered by the American Library Association’s Center for the Future of Libraries.
