CHICAGO – St. Charles Public Library, Outreach Services Department, has been selected for the 2018 ASCLA Exceptional Service Award administered by the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA).
The St. Charles Public Library, Outreach Services Department models replicable components for successful outreach to nontraditional library users. Through engagement, social interaction, good collaboration, community awareness and community partnerships, the Outreach Services Department has taken traditional library services and expanded it to a hospital, a local homeless shelter, Meals on Wheels, and senior facilities; established eight new community book exchanges, increased services to patrons with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia: and launch programming at facilities.
The Outreach Services team (consisting of David Kelsey, Dana Hintz, Lynda Spraner, and Christine Steck) continually develop new and innovative ways to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals who cannot visit the Library in person. Due to their dedicated staff, Outreach Services has grown from serving 79 patrons in April 2015, to currently serving over 250 patrons each month, a 316% increase.
The St. Charles Public Library, Outreach Services Department will be honored at the ASCLA Achievement Awards Ceremony on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 8:30-10:00am at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. All conference attendees are invited to attend the event. Additional event details are available on the conference website.
The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), a division of the American Library Association, enhances the effectiveness of library service by advocating for and providing high quality networking, enrichment and educational opportunities for its diverse members, who represent state library agencies, libraries serving special populations, library cooperatives and library consultants.
