CHICAGO—ALA Publishing eLearning Solutions, in collaboration with the San José State University School of Information (SJSU iSchool), announces a new advanced eCourse, Children’s Services Fundamentals. This advanced eCourse begins on Monday, April 9, 2018 and continues for 12 weeks.

Are you new to children’s services or working with children in the library? Enhance your youth services skills in this new 12-week advanced eCourse led by Penny Peck, an instructor at San Jose State University’s iSchool with over 30 years of experience as a children’s librarian.

Designed for librarians who have been tasked with providing services to children, but who may have limited or no experience working with children in a library setting, this eCourse teaches you the fundamentals of children’s services—from tips on how to best interact with kids one-on-one to how to run library programs for kids.

Throughout this 12-week course, Peck covers a wide variety of areas including reference, homework help, readers’ advisory, collection development, storytime, programming for families, summer learning, and basic promotion of books to children. You’ll learn how to reach out to, mentor, and work with different children populations including latchkey kids, children from non-English speaking families, and children with special needs.

Learning Outcomes

After participating in this eCourse, you will:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of children’s services and how to interact with kids
  • Be able to provide base level reference, programming, and collection development services for children
  • Have knowledge and strategies that will help you work with children of different ages and different backgrounds
  • Be able to schedule and supervise ongoing programs at your library

Participants who complete this Advanced eCourse will receive an SJSU iSchool/ALA Publishing Advanced Certificate of Completion. This certificate will affirm your status as having completed all the steps of an Advanced eCourse on Winning Support and Influencing Communities for Library Funding and will provide proof of your participation that you can add to your resume.

Advanced eCourses—a new format in which faculty from the SJSU iSchool will help you dig deep into cutting-edge topics during 12-week online courses, equipping you with potentially transformative knowledge and skills, and taking you from introductory through high-level content.
