Dawes, Pelayo-Lozada, and Wong elected to ALA Executive Board

(CHICAGO) Trevor A. Dawes, Lessa Kanani'opua Pelayo-Lozada, and Patricia “Patty” Wong have been elected to serve on the American Library Association (ALA) Executive Board. The new board members were elected by the ALA Council in a vote taken at the 2017 ALA Midwinter Meeting held January 20-24 in Atlanta. Each will serve three-year terms beginning in July 2017 and concluding in June 2020.
Dawes is vice provost for libraries and museums and May Morris university librarian at the University of Delaware in Newark. He has served two terms on ALA Council: 2008-11 and 2015-preset, and was the 2013-14 president of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). He has served on numerous committees within ALA and ACRL, including co-chairing the Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (2014-16). Dawes is an active member of ACRL, the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA), the Learning Round Table (LEARNRT), and the New Members Round Table (NMRT). In addition to his ALA activities, he is a life member of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) and the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA). Dawes holds a BA from Columbia University, an MA, Ed.M from Teachers College, Columbia University, and an MLS from Rutgers University.
Pelayo-Lozada, Young Readers Librarian at Palos Verdes Library District, Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., has served the Council since 2012. She has served on various committees at both the ALA and division level, and is currently the chair of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) Advisory Committee. She is an active member of the Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC), LLAMA, the Public Library Association (PLA) and the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT). In addition, Pelayo-Lozada is the current president of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA). She holds an AA in philosophy from El Camino College, Torrance, Calif.; a BA in sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA); and an MLIS also from UCLA.
Wong is the former County Librarian/Chief Archivist at Yolo County Library, Woodland, Calif., and the incoming City Librarian at Santa Monica (Calif.) Public Library. She is also part-time faculty at San Jose State University iSchool. Wong has served several terms as at-large Councilor (1996-2007, 2012-14) and is currently the California Chapter Councilor. This will be her second term on the ALA Executive Board having previously served 2001-05. She has held numerous committee and task force positions, including past chair of the Budget Analysis and Review Committee (BARC). She is an active member of ALSC, LLAMA, PLA, SRRT, the Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT), and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT). Wong is the recipient of several awards, including the 2012 ALA Equality Award. She holds a BA in Women’s Studies and an MLIS both from the University of California at Berkley.
ACRL, ALSC, LLAMA, and PLA are divisions of the ALA.
The ALA Executive Board manages the affairs of the Association. It is composed of the president, president-elect, immediate past president, treasurer, executive director and eight members elected by Council from among the members of that body.
