Chicago—ALA Editions announces a new iteration of our popular eCourse, Innovative Approaches to Library Instruction: Online to Face-to-Face. Paul Signorelli will serve as the instructor for a 4-week facilitated eCourse starting on September 12, 2016.

Learning outcomes

After participating in this course, you will gain the:

  • Knowledge of and ability to adapt key elements of Connected Learning, the Flipped Classroom model, connectivist MOOCs, and various types of learning spaces (including those in which learners bring their own tech devices) to library learning programs
  • Knowledge of and ability to draw upon a variety of online learning resources to create engaging learning opportunities for library staff and users
  • Knowledge of and ability to seek additional resources to support innovations in learning programs

Are you involved in designing and facilitating library learning opportunities? Did you know of the multiple forms of library instruction? How about participating in a workshop that presents a unified framework to help you take an integrated approach to adapting different approaches to your overall learning programs?

The lecture as a learning tool is far from dead. There are numerous other models for facilitating learning that are gaining widespread and well-deserved attention in libraries and other learning organizations. This four-week hands-on eCourse, facilitated by training/learning specialist Paul Signorelli, will take you through a survey of Connected Learning, the Flipped Classroom model, connectivist MOOCs (massive open online courses), and innovations in learning spaces that support various approaches to learning in libraries.

You will learn about these topics through reports, short articles, case studies, and collaboration via the course bulletin boards and forum. You will walk away with a box full of ideas on how to immediately adapt what you’ve learned to serve the needs of learners in your own library – onsite and online settings.

Part 2: Flipped Classroom Model

  • Applying the Flipped Learning model to library staff training and learning opportunities for library users

Part 3: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

  • An overview of the connectivist MOOC approach
  • An exploration of connectivist MOOCs
  • Adapting the connectivist MOOC approach to library learning opportunities

Part 4: Learning Spaces

  • A survey of learning spaces in libraries and other learning organizations
  • An exploration of low-cost ways to rework a learning space, including use of a bring your own device/bring your own technology approach
  • Adapting innovations in learning spaces to our library staff and users

About the Instructor

Paul Signorelli, co-author of Workplace Learning & Leadership with Lori Reed, is a San Francisco-based writer, trainer, presenter, and consultant exploring, fostering, and documenting innovations in learning. Having earned an MLIS through the University of North Texas (with an emphasis on online learning), he remains active in the American Library Association, the New Media Consortium (educational technology), and the Association for Talent Development (formerly the American Society for Training & Development).

Registration for this ALA Editions facilitated eCourse, which begins on September 12, 2016, can be purchased at the ALA Store. Participants in this course will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message board participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (MP3 files), and downloading and viewing PDF and PowerPoint files.
