CHICAGO — Offered by ALA Publishing in collaboration with the San Jose State University School of Information (SJSU iSchool), this 12-week Advanced eCourse: Management Bootcamp for Librarians and Other Information Professionals, beginning on Apr. 4, 2016, is facilitated by Sean Gaffney.

There is an increasing need for librarians to have the skills it takes to manage operations at higher and higher levels of expertise. While many of us joined the profession with no interest in being a “manager,” it seems that management responsibilities keep creeping into our roles—whether we are an information desk supervisor, the head of technical services, or the newly named director of a small library.

This advanced eCourse has been adapted from a 15-week graduate-level library management course that Sean Gaffney has been teaching since 2008 at San Jose State University School of Information. While you will learn a bit on theory, this eCourse is about providing you with practical skills in management. While you may not find an answer to every question, you will be positioned to understand the basics and know where to go next for additional answers.

After completing this eCourse, you’ll be able to:

  • plan effectively;
  • market your organization;
  • create a SWOT analysis to help position your library for growth;
  • delegate effectively;
  • understand Federal labor laws;
  • develop a budget;
  • much, much more!

Participants who complete this Advanced eCourse will receive a SJSU iSchool/ALA Publishing Advanced Certificate of Completion. This certificate will affirm your status as having completed all the steps of an Advanced eCourse on Management and will provide proof of your participation that you can add to your resume.

Advanced eCourses—a new format in which faculty from the SJSU iSchool will help you dig deep into cutting-edge topics during 12-week online courses, equipping you with potentially transformative knowledge and skills, and taking you from introductory through high-level content.
