President's Program

Joint ALCTS/LLAMA President's Program: "The Business of Social Impact: Creating a World Where Everyone Has Value"
Monday, 10:30 am-noon, MCP-W192
Join the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services and  LLAMA President John Spears in welcoming Dorri McWhorter, CEO of the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, as the featured speaker in this special, joint program. McWhorter, who became the CEO of the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago in 2013, will detail her own journey to transform the 140-year-old social service agency to a 21st century social enterprise, and will demonstrate how every business, for profit and nonprofit, is a social enterprise with a role in advancing society.  This program is generously sponsored in part by GOBI Library Solutions.

Preconferences on Friday, June 23

Library Furniture Showroom and Factory Tour, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Merchandise Mart
Participants will meet at the Merchandise Mart and tour four furniture and equipment showrooms. After, a box lunch and transportation will be provided to Interior Craft, a furniture manufacturing company. We will see how a chair is made and learn how the manufacturing process impacts longevity and durability.  We’ll discuss how to select furniture that combines style, functionality and durability.  The day ends with a tour of the Agati Furniture showroom and reception.

Cultural Proficiency for Library Leaders, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, MCP W176a
This Career Institute is designed for managers committed to ensuring the library’s inclusive workplace environment and for those responsible for developing diversity-related programs and services. Participants will be introduced to the core concepts of cultural proficiency, how to create shared language, and how to apply cultural dexterity to their leadership role. We will learn about the impact of unconscious bias on perception and behavior and explore practical ways of moving from diversity “awareness” to “action”.

Chicago's Cool Green Scene: Learning From the Best 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Off Site
Full-day tour of sustainable environments, including the award-winning Chicago Public Library Chinatown Branch (targeting LEED Gold) by SOM, Loyola University’s Klarcheck Learning Commons (LEED Silver Certified) by SCB, and architectural firm Perkins+Will, designer of innovative and sustainable workplaces. P+W is working toward LEED Platinum designation for their new offices in the historic Wrigley Building.
