John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award

Community of Practice: Marketing and Communications

Charge: To review and assess applications for the John Cotton Dana Award based on established criteria and evaluation process, reaching consensus on the award recipients. Committee members also help raise awareness of the award, assist with presenting the awards during ALA annual conference, and periodically review and revise the award criteria as needed. The Committee Chair serves as a liaison between LLAMA and the awards sponsors - the H.W. Wilson Foundation and EBSCO Information Services.

Our Work


  • Assist with promoting the call for entries
  • Review and evaluate award entries
  • Select and notify award recipients
  • Write press release to announce the winners (distributed by ALA/LLAMA and EBSCO)
  • Present awards during the ALA Annual Conference

Expected Time Commitment:

  • 1 hour in the Fall for application review
  • 10-20 hours in March/April for submission scoring
  • Two days in April in Chicago (travel paid) for final submission review selection
  • Two hours at Annual Conference for program participation

Desired skills, knowledge, and experience:

  • Must be a previous winner of the John Cotton Dana award
  • Professional background in library marketing/public relations/communications
