Establishing an Institutional Repository

This institute will cover the technical, policy and human factors related to establishing an institutional repository (IR). Based in part on the presenter's Library Technology Report "Establishing an Institutional Repository" (July/August 2004), the institute will reflect the current state of IR development and best practices, as well as the lessons learned by early adopters. Discussion topics will include:

  • What is an IR and why should my institution have one
  • Who should be involved in the project
  • Policy decisions
  • Cost factors
  • Overview of available IR systems
  • Content recruitment strategies

The institute aims to provide a very realistic picture of the costs, benefits and complexities involved in establishing an IR.


This program is intended for librarians, administrators, and computer professionals at institutions with an IR project under consideration or in early stages of development. The material will be oriented to an audience from academic and research institutions because current IR use is most prevalent at those organizations.


Susan Gibbons is the Assistant Dean of Public Services and Collection Development at the River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester. She has an MLS and MA in History from Indiana University and a professional MBA from the University of Massachusetts. She has been involved in the University of Rochester's IR project since 2000 and is the co-principal investigator of an IMLS grant to better understand how an IR can fit into the current work practices of faculty from different disciplines.
