Funding for school libraries is in jeopardy. Across the country, students are attending schools without effective school library programs. Without access to school libraries, students are missing out on college and career readiness programs, digital literacy instruction, and personalized support from state certified school librarians. The Strengthening Kids’ Interest in Learning and Libraries (SKILLS) Act is a bill introduced in the Senate that would ensure that students everywhere have access to a quality school library program. National Friends of Libraries Week 
If you love libraries and aren’t part of your local library’s Friends group, you may want to consider joining. Friends of Library groups can be found in nearly every community and on many campuses across the country. These groups, made up of volunteers, raise money and increase public awareness about their library. Money raised by these groups support such important library services as summer reading programs for children, author events, special collections, and new technologies. Some Friends work with their local libraries to get involved in politics, lobbying for advocacy efforts such as increasing the library’s budget, building new facilities, or even legislation that affects libraries. A few years ago, Paul Thiebaut came up with a simple mantra: Success starts at home. These days, he wants to make that happen.On Saturday (Aug. 6), his two-year-old literacy nonprofit 10 Books a Home (10BH) will host its first event, A Bookcase in Every Home, at a private residence in Redwood City. Approximately 40 East Palo Alto preschoolers and kindergarteners will attend, along with their families and 22 volunteers. All are getting ready and putting on their best faces to celebrate Teen Read Week, October 16-22, 2011! This year's theme is Picture It @ your library®, and libraries and booksellers are encouraging teens to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials, to seek out creative coffee table and quirky pocket-sized books, or to imagine the world through stories and literature, just for the fun of it. Libraries around the country are planning special events and contests, and are offering new and featured books and movies aimed at encouraging teens to read for pleasure, as well as to visit libraries for free access to reading and audiovisual materials.
