An Analysis of Tables of Contents in Recent English Language Books
Robert Conrad Winke
LRTS, vol. 43, no. 1, January 1999, pp. 45-60

In response to current trends in cataloging to pare down the amount of description in the catalog record, Winke investigated and convincingly demonstrated that tables of contents are relatively straightforward and brief. The author clearly and concisely addressed issues including the percentage of titles with TOCs suitable for inclusion, the average length of the TOC's, and the hierarchical complexity of TOCs. The topic is significant to ALCTS because it links the utility and construction of catalog records to the evidence that the inclusion of tables of contents in catalog records increases retrieval potential. The article is well-written and practical. It is a well researched article and a welcome addition to the literature of technical services.
