Technical Services Workstations: A Review of the State of teh Art
Michael Kaplan LRTS, vol. 40, no. 2, April, 1996, pp. 171-183
Kaplan provides a definitive history of the progression of automation of cataloging processes, from the emergence of the MARC format and the bibliographic utilities to the current (and still developing) fully integrated cataloger's workstation. He chronicles the key players and major hurdles along the way. His article synthesizes a broad range of technical and professional developments and demonstrates how they have coalesced in an end project which has not only increased productivity but spurred innovation and entrepreneurialism among catalogers. His clear prose makes complex technical change comprehensible to all and builds a convincing case that the technical services workstations will have a demonstrably positive impact on catalogers' professional lives.
