[Strategy Series 1 of 3] Project Management in Libraries - 05/14/2018 - 06/11/2018

In this class, participants will review the skills and experiences needed to be exemplary project managers in a library organization. Interactive and dynamic activities such as discussions, reading assignments, and class exercises will accompany each week’s lectures. The four-part topical tour of project management will culminate with a final project based on project management principles. The course is self-paced.

[Strategy Series 2 of 3] Who Manages, Who Leads? - 07/09/2018 - 08/06/2018

Often, new managers have little practical working knowledge of what to expect in their new role, or if they are an existing manager, already in the role, they can be uncertain of the best methods to use in managing other staff, resources and services.  Leaders sometimes emerge from management. Yes, some leaders are born, but others can be trained.

“Who Manages, Who Leads” is a four-week interactive program to introduce and enlighten both new and existing managers and leaders to theory and practice. This course benefits front-line staff that excel in their positions and are promoted to managerial positions, or for those who have a great resume, which expectedly leads to an interview – resulting in being hired into a coveted management spot. This course discusses managerial and leadership opportunities in between this spectrum, those promoted to those hired into management positions.

As part of the learning process, all participants will join in discussions and complete short assignments in order to receive a completion certificate. Additionally, you will be provided an opportunity to research the literature specific to your own professional. All students will also complete a series of short answer questions and a small final project.

[Strategy Series 3 of 3] Marketing the 21st Century Library - 9/10/2018 - 10/8/2018

This course teaches participants that marketing and promotions can help us better serve our patrons in the 21st century, and improve awareness and regard for our profession.

Marketing in the 21st century library is a four week course designed for MLS candidates, graduates, librarians and paraprofessionals who are charged with creating marketing and promotions plans. It will highlight the overall importance of using marketing and promotions to increase awareness and plan for the future.This course is unique as it succinctly outlines the differences between marketing plans, which are strategic, and promotions plan, which are reactive. It contains principles of survey methods, project planning, staff support and buy in. It is also a method of increasing respect and support of librarians in all types of libraries.

Learning Outcomes

  • Issues facing new and existing managers who need to create project management plans.
  • The importance of project champions, administrators, and cross-departmental staff will be covered in depth.
  • Effective communication (written and verbal), training staff, managing cross departmental projects, delegating tasks, and being the middle manager. Leading literature will be uncovered, reviewed and discussed.

By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to assume both leadership roles and managerial roles, in relation to effective project management.

[Strategy Series 2 of 3] Who Manages, Who Leads? - 07/09/2018 - 08/06/2018

  • Theories of management and leadership are explored and discussed
  • Participants will understand the differences between leadership and management, and gain insight in how to move from on role to the next and how to be both simultaneously
  • Individual exercises tie in practical issues that present to manager and leaders, such as hiring, firing, and suggesting corrections to existing behaviors among staff. Mission and vision development and implementation  are discussed.
  • Read premier literature on the topics of leading, managing, and  learning your own styles of management. Activities and training involved in improving you own skills set will be presented

  • Participants will learn how to create a marketing plan skeleton
  • Participants will learn how to strategically plan using the TIPR method (Think, Investigate, Plan and React)

Who Should Attend

All library staff and professionals who are in managerial roles, those who aspire for these roles, or those who are forced into such roles. 


Debra Lucas-Alfieri has been the Head of Reference and Interlibrary Loan at D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY, since 2002. Her most recent book is titled "Marketing the 21st Century Library: The Time is Now", published by Elsevier. Due to the success of her first book, Debra is under contract with Elsevier to write a second textbook on managerial and leadership skills. She has taught online courses for both the Library Juice Academy and Simmons College.

Her book chapters appear in Middle Management in Academic and Public Libraries (2011) and the 21st Century Handbook of Anthropology (2010). Encyclopedia articles appear in the Encyclopedia of Power (2011), the Encyclopedia of Time (2009), the Encyclopedia of Anthropology (2005), and the 20th Century Encyclopedia of Pop Culture (2000). She has also published academic journal articles in Collaborative Librarianship (2011), the Journal of Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery & Electronic Reserve (2009), and the Journal of Library and Information Science (2007)

All content for this course will be provided by the instructor. No textbook required. 

The Moodle login instructions will be sent the Friday before the start date. The course site will remain open one week after the end date for students to complete any assignments and submit the course evaluation survey.


Continuing Education Credit - A certificate of completion will be sent to each participant upon successful completion of each course.
Although these course are not CEU-certified, many licensing boards will accept them for credit. Requirements vary by state and school district regarding certification and continuing education credits. The decision to grant CEU credits remains entirely up to your state or school district. If you are in need of credits, check with your state and/or school district before enrolling to determine eligibility. Some states will review your certificate of completion and course description to determine eligibility.
