Library Service to Individuals with Physical, Learning, Social, Cognitive and Health Disabilities Forum

To help libraries better serve people of all ages with the following types of disabilities:

  • Physical disabilities
  • Disabilities that affect learning, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, non-verbal learning disabilities, and attention deficit disorder
  • Disabilities that affect social interaction, including schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorders, and depression
  • Disabilities that can affect cognition, including Down syndrome, Fragile X and traumatic brain injury
  • Disabilities that affect general health, including emphysema, cancer, and diabetes.

We seek to inform library staff about the information, communication, technology and format needs of people with these types of disabilities and how to meet them through programs, guidelines, and the Internet. We will act as a forum for discussion, action and advocacy.

We will work closely with other divisions, including the following, to address these issues:

  • ALSC Library Service To Special Population Children and their Families
  • YALSA Special Needs Committee
  • RUSA Services to an Aging Population Committee
  • The ALA office
  • OLOS
