Veterans: They Served Us-Here's How to Serve Them

Since 2013, Gail Borden Public Library District has collaborated with local veterans to develop innovative programs that serve area veterans, including a groundbreaking project called "Veterans on the Go." Under the umbrella title of "Veterans on the Go," the library worked with partners to foster the Veterans Information Networking Sessions; "Visiting Vets," veterans who visit veterans in senior residential facilities; and "Veterans Voices," to connect veterans who speak at local schools and organizations surrounding Veterans Day.

In this webinar, learn how to build your own veteran-focused programs within your community by reaching partners and volunteers, empowering your local veterans to connect with other veterans, creating a comfortable environment to share experiences, providing education to meet veterans' specialized needs, and ultimately honoring and supporting your veteran community.

Who Should Attend

Public libraries interested in connecting with their veteran population, which is only slated to rise over the next two decades. This content is relevant because the services discussed are achievable by all public libraries.

Presenters

Ben Bahl is an Information Services Librarian with Gail Borden Public Library District (GBPLD). He previously supervised a team of five responsible for delivering programming and services to customers of all ages across the library district, which spans more than 65 square miles and serves approximately 150,000 residents. He has been with GBPLD since 2015 and earned his MLIS from Dominican University in 2015.

Tish Calhamer is the Community Engagement Manager at the Gail Borden Public Library District. She has worked at the Gail Borden Public Library for 25 years, her one and only professional position since earning her MLIS from the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign in 1993. She earned a M.Mus in Musicology in 1992 and her B.Mus, also from UIUC, in 1990-an all-Illini education. 

Glenna Godinsky is the Life Enrichment Liaison at Gail Borden Public Library District. With a background in developing leadership programming for at-risk students in grades 5-8, Glenna directed the creation of 15 original operas from scratch as an Artist in Residence program at Elgin Community College for 15 years. She has extensive experience in dementia care and currently designs and implements library programming for seniors (including veterans) in assisted living/memory care communities as well as residential development communities and developmental day programs. Glenna is a YWCA Leadership Award recipient in Education.

Nancy Haggard is the Manager of Volunteer Services at the Gail Borden Public Library District. She has served in volunteer administration for seven years. She has developed over 40 different volunteer assignments to help the library’s innovative staff serve a diverse population. Gail Borden volunteers serve in traditional roles like shelving materials and shelf reading, but also as exhibit docents, outreach readers and program presenters and facilitators. Last year, over 800 GBPL volunteers served 13,600 hours, and the program continues to grow.

Stacy Rausch is the Business & Consumer Information Librarian at Gail Borden Public Library District. She specializes in project management, creating public programs for adults and families, and grant writing and management. She was the grant writer for the Gail’s Toolkit website, an ALA Carnegie-Whitney Award-winning project. She earned her MLIS degree at San Jose State University in 2018.
