Independent Librarians’ Exchange (ILEX)
The purpose of the Independent Librarians’ Exchange Section of ASCLA is to expand the definition of librarianship by supporting ALA members who work outside of traditional library settings and by providing programs, information exchange, and networking opportunities.

Consulting from Both Sides of the Fence: Why Libraries Hire Consultants and How Consultants Get Jobs
Sunday, June 26, 10:30am – 12:00 pm, MCC 339
This program will focus on teams of a consultant and a client. What was the client looking for when an RFP was issued? Why did the consultant respond? What did the consultant feel he/she could offer? Why did the client hire this particular consultant over other possible consultants? What worked and what were the challenges of the consultant/client experience and relationship? We have three well-known consultants with their clients to share their insights. Consultant Bill Wilson will be joined with Tennessee State Librarian Chuck Sherrill. Consultant June Garcia will be joined by Lynn Wheeler, Director of the Carroll County Public Library (MD). Consultant Kimberly Bolan Cullin will be joined by Mary Hougland, Director of the Jennings County Public Library (IN) and Edra Waterman, director of the Plainfield Public Library (IN). Nancy Bolt will moderate the program.
Consultants Giving Back: An Opportunity for Free Advice from Expert Consultants
Sunday, June 26, 1:30 - 5:00 pm, Hilton, Magnolia Room
Consultants appreciate the work we receive from libraries and this is our chance to give back to the library community. Librarians can request up to an hour of free consultation with a consultant of their choice. Some consultants are also available at other times. For a list of participating consultants, click here .
ILEX Forum: Marketing and Promotion (...and anything else you want to talk about)
Saturday, June 25th, 4:00 - 5:30 pm, W Hotel, Studio 56 Room
ILEX sponsors this forum for consultants to get together. New and experienced consultants can bring their questions and experiences to this informal discussion forum. The discussion will begin with the topic of marketing and promotion by consultants, but can include many other topics. At Midwinter we had a lively discussion that we hope to continue in New Orleans.
The best way to become involved with ILEX is to reach out to member leaders in the section. You’ll find a list of ILEX Executive Committee members here . Once you login at ala.org, contact information for these members will be viewable at this same page. You can also contact the ASCLA staff—find out how to reach them here —or use our general e-mail address, firstname.lastname@example.org .
