How to Join United for Libraries

If you are in Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, or Wisconsin, your state library has purchased statewide access to United for Libraries resources; visit www.ala.org/united/stateaccess to register or log in. NOTE: Statewide access to training/resources varies by state and is *not* personal membership.


Current ALA Members
To add the United for Libraries division to your current ALA membership, please click here or call (800) 545-2433, option 1. United for Libraries membership is based on your ALA membership type and ranges between $60 to $70 per year (pro-rated to match your current ALA membership expiration). A special rate of $25 is available for those with an ALA student membership. For more information please review information about the benefits of joining United for Libraries.

New ALA Members
If you are not yet a member of ALA, you can join as a personal member. Trustees and Friends/Foundations pay $130/year for ALA and United for Libraries membership. To join, call (800) 545-2433, option 1, or visit www.ala.org/membership. For more information please review the benefits of joining United for Libraries.

  • Trustee/Library Board Member - select the "Trustee" category of ALA membership for $70 and add United for Libraries as a division for $60.
  • Friends of the Library - select the "Friend" cateogry of ALA membership for $70 and add United for Libraries as a division for $60.
  • Foundation - select the "Associate" category of ALA membership for $70 and add United for Libraries as a division for $60.
  • All other personal member types, please select the appropriate category of ALA membership and add United for Libraries as a division (cost ranges from $60 to $70 based on your personal membership category).

Organizational Members
Organizational members of ALA may add United for Libraries as a division for $150. Please review the list benefits for organizational members before joining. Note that Learning Live is not included with organizational membership.

Friends Group, Foundation, and Trustee Board Group Members
Effective May 6, 2022, the group membership option is transitioning to personal membership in ALA and United for Libraries. If your group received a renewal notice by mail or email, you may proceed with renewing by mail or phone. Groups with an expiration date of November 30, 2022, and beyond will receive details by email and mail about converting to personal membership, including the many new benefits and resources included with personal membership.
