ALTAFF Staff

Sally Gardner Reed is the Executive Director ALTAFF, formerly Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA). Prior to accepting this position in 2002, Sally spent nearly 20 years in library administration running small public libraries in New England and the Midwest, and most recently she was the director of the Norfolk Public Library in Virginia.

Sally is the author of eight books on library management, advocacy, volunteers, and fundraising and numerous articles for professional library journals. She has presented programs and workshops to hundreds Friends of Library groups, boards of trustees, and librarian groups nationally and internationally. She is the 2000 recipient of ALA’s Herbert and Virginia White Award for promoting libraries and librarianship.

As executive director, Sally works with ALTAFF leaders to increase our capacity to serve our members though strategic planning, committee assignments and resource development. She is responsible for the overall management of the staff and the development of member services and benefits.

Beth Nawalinski is the Director of Marketing & Communications for ALTAFF. Although Beth completed her undergraduate studies in nuclear engineering, she has pursued her career for more than 15 years supporting libraries and literacy first as Community Relations Coordinator with Barnes & Noble, followed by Public Relations Specialist with the Norfolk (VA) Public Library, and most recently, Marketing & Public Relations Coordinator with Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA). She is the co-author of 101+ Great Ideas for Libraries and Friends as well as the recently released, Even More Great Ideas for Libraries and Friends.

As Director of Marketing & Communications, Beth coordinates marketing, publicity, and communications to members, the media, and the general public. She oversees the Web site, publications, and awards, and works with corporate sponsors to develop special offers for members and affiliates. Beth also manages the Books for Babies and Literary Landmarks programs and develops efforts such as National Friends of Libraries Week and the Virtual March on Washington.

Jillian Kalonick is the Marketing/Public Relations Specialist for ALTAFF. Jillian has worked for public libraries since 1994, most recently at Princeton (N.J.) Public Library and Easttown (Pa.) Library & Information Center. She earned a master's degree in library and information science from Drexel University and a bachelor's degree in English from Hollins University. Jillian has also worked as a journalist and editor, as well as in marketing and public relations for nonprofit arts organizations.

Jillian edits and designs The VOICE, ALTAFF's bi-monthly newsletter and assists with the ALTAFF Web site. She facilitates partnerships between Friends groups and libraries in cities and towns where ALTAFF's national spokesperson Paula Poundstone performs. Jillian also assists with publicity and marketing for ALTAFF programs, special events, and celebrations such as National Friends of Libraries Week and the Virtual March on Washington.
