Passive programs can be a librarian’s dream or nightmare- less work during the program, but limited interaction with customers. A successful program can also prove difficult to track participation. Join a panel of experienced youth services librarians as they tackle the definition of a passive program, how to track participation and share fun examples of ways to engage staff, customers, and children.
- At the end of this session, participants will hear hands-on tips and tricks from librarians who have implemented passive programs themselves.
- At the end of this session, participants will take away information and guidance on how to statistically measure participation in a passive program.
- At the end of this session, participants will feel empowered to brainstorm their own passive programming within their own unique spaces, and will leave with concrete ideas.

Emily Mroczek (Bayci)i is a fourth-year children’s librarian at the Naperville Public Library who has worked on implementing passive programs as a major component of summer and winter reading programs.
Kerry Bailey is a Tween Librarian at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. She sees passive programs as a way to engage customers every time they enter the library.
Tina Ruszala is a Youth at Teen Services Department Head at the Palos Heights Public Library who has implemented regular passive programming at two public libraries. She believes that passive programming encourages family interactions and promotes communication, both among families and between patrons and staff.
Jessica Rodrigues is the Head of Youth Services at the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library, a small library that uses passive programming to help patrons feel involved and at home.
