LGBTQAI+ Books to Share, Conversations to Have

More LGBTQAI+ books are published each year. How should you select, display, share, and use in your library for children of all ages? Titles and suggestions will lead into online conversations. Bring your questions, ideas, and concerns and together we will attempt to resolve them.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:
 
1. Gain a greater understanding of the variety of LGBTQAI+ books available for all readers.
2. Understand reasoning and rationale for keeping these books accessible for all children.
3. Learn ways to share and/or create programming with these titles.
4. Learn ways to approach/ diffuse potential issues among stakeholders.

Instructors

Christina Dorr is currently in her 30th year in libraries, public, college, school. Her education includes a Ph.D. in children's & YA lit/literacy from the Ohio State University. She is so proud to have been mentored by both Rudine Sims Bishop and Janet Hickman. She has also loved the last 10 years teaching adjunct for OSU and Kent State University. She has the unique experience of having taught from PreSchool to Grad School. For the past 20 years She has written numerous articles, columns, book reviews, and co-published two books just recently on children's & YA lit. She has also presented nationally & internationally, and has begun consulting as well. She hopes to do much more of all of these as retirement nears.
 
Liz Deskins is an author, Past President of the Ohio Educational Library Media Association, and a teacher-librarian at Hilliard Bradley High School who shares her 30+ years of experience ranging from elementary to high school and College. She is a frequent conference speaker, active AASL and ALSC member, and life long learner.
