Breakfast for Bill Program

Join some of your favorite authors and illustrators for a very special Breakfast for Bill. This panel will feature Margarita Engle and two of her illustrators, Raúl Colón and Mike Curato, who will discuss the creative collaboration process.

Margarita Engle HeadshotMargarita Engle is the national Young People’s Poet Laureate, and the first Latino to receive that honor. She is the Cuban-American author of many verse novels, including The Surrender Tree, a Newbery Honor recipient, and The Lightning Dreamer, a PEN Literary Award for Young Adult Literature recipient. Her verse memoir, Enchanted Air, received the Pura Belpré Award, a Walter Dean Myers Award Honor, and was a finalist for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction, among others. Her picture book Drum Dream Girl received the Charlotte Zolotow Award. Margarita collaborated with Mike Curato on All the Way to Havana and later also collaborated with Raúl Colón on Miguel’s Brave Knight.
Raul Colon HeadshotRaúl Colón was born in New York City and moved with his parents to Caguas, Puerto Rico, where he studied commercial art. In 1978, Colón made Florida his home, working at an educational television center designing everything from puppets to short animated films. In 1988, the artist settled with his family in New City, New York, and began a freelance career. Today, Colón continues to be a versatile and acclaimed illustrator whose work has appeared in important national publications. An award-winning illustrator of more than 30 books for children, Colón has received a Golden Kite Award, a Pura Belpré Award, and both a gold and silver medal in The Original Art show. He is a two-time recipient of the New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Books.
Mike Curato HeadshotMike Curato is an illustrator who loves small treasures. He has illustrated many books for children and is the author and illustrator of Little Elliot, Big City; Little Elliot, Big Family; and Little Elliot, Big Fun. You can find him on any given day walking around the city, eating a cupcake (or thinking about it).

Among the celebrated picture books Selznick has illustrated are the Caldecott Honor Book, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins, by Barbara Kerley and the Sibert Honor Book, When Marian Sang, by Pam Muñoz Ryan. David Serlin HeadshotDavid Serlin is a writer, editor, and historian who teaches at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author or editor of numerous books and articles for adults.
