How Libraries can use Literature to Support Family Engagement in Children's Social and Emotional Learning

Research shows that libraries are trusted spaces within communities and are therefore uniquely positioned to engage families in meaningful experiences that support children’s learning both inside and outside of school (Lopez, Caspe, McWilliams, 2016). One way that libraries can do this is by using literature to inspire dialogue with children and families about the importance of developing and practicing Life Skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will understand the research base behind Harvard Family Research Project’s 5R's framework and the Aspen Institute's People, Place and Platform framework. 
  • Participants will learn how to use literature as an anchor for hosting essential conversations with families and children about the importance of developing Life Skills. 
  • Participants will be trained on how to implement a ready to use Life Skills Storytime Series.

Jennifer DuBois is currently the Head Teacher Librarian at Wildwood Elementary School. In this role, Jennifer has developed a robust K-5 scope and sequence, which focuses on library sciences, media literacy, and supports student’s individual reading interests and needs. Most recently, Jennifer has focused on using literature to introduce the design thinking process and maker projects to young children. Jennifer holds a B.A. and a M.A. in Education from California State University, Long Beach. Jennifer also holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Teacher Librarian Credential.
Maria is currently a library and technology associate at Wildwood Elementary School. Prior to joining Wildwood, Maria worked as a research specialist at the Harvard Family Research Project in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In this role, Maria worked on several projects for the Office of Head Start National Center on Parent Family and Community Engagement. Maria holds an Ed.M. in Prevention Science and Practice from The Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. in Human Services from The University of Delaware.
