"I hate reading." "Reading is boring". Being seen in the library is social suicide". are some direct quotes from young reluctant readers. How librarians, both school and public, can effectively engage with hard-to-shift children of all ages and develop strategies for firing them up is what this webinar is all about. When the demands of the curriculum, staff shortages, budget management, access and the day-to-day management of a busy library leave increasingly less time for reader development it's even more important to create stimulating, positive reading opportunities and make the most of your lending collections.

Learning Outcomes

The webinar will help colleagues to build a strong customer-focused approach to their role as school librarian: the most important stakeholders in any school library are its students. Using successful case studies from "Reading by Right" (Facet Publishing, 2017) as a basis, learners will be able to set up, facilitate and effectively maintain one or more of the following to help support reluctant/less-able readers: a trainee student librarian program, a visual literacy program, a Caldecott Medal shadowing group.

Who Should Attend

The target audience would include school librarians and teacher librarians (primary, middle and secondary) or anyone working in a supporting role in a school library setting. Re. developing visual literacy, English department heads might also find it useful.
