Design-an-eBadge Contest
***This contest has ended Thank you to everyone who submitted entries and voted for their favorite ALSC eBadge on the ALSC Blog!***
Contest Basics
Help ALSC design a new e-badge/ribbon! ALSC wants your help in designing a new badge that members can proudly display on their email signature lines or blogs. The badge should reflect the creativity of the division. This contest is being sponsored by the Friends of ALSC and the ALSC Membership Committee.
What are e-badges/ribbons?
Badges are an emblem or an icon that signifies membership or status. An e-badge can be displayed on a website, on a blog, on a social networking site or in an email signature line. You might have seen badges like the one below, connected to people who were attending the 2012 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim.

How do I enter?
There are several ways to enter. The more creative you are the better!
- Create your badge using construction paper, scissors, markers, glue, etc. Take a picture (JPEG or GIF)
- Create your badge using software such as Adobe Illustrator, Paint, or any other design software and submit it as a file (JPEG or GIF)
- Write down an idea, describing in specific detail the colors, text, and images associated with the badge, submit as a written idea.
Once you have your idea, using the subject "ALSC eBadge Contest" email it with your 100 word-or-less description (see below) to Dan Rude, drude@ala.org. Submissions must be received by Friday, August 24 at 11:59 PM CST.
IMPORTANT: Even with a photo/design file entries must include a brief description (100 words or less) of why the badge represents ALSC members. This description will be used for voting.
Who is eligible?
The submission process is open to all personal members of ALSC. One entry per member.
Anyone can vote in the final round.
How does the contest work?
The contest is comprised of one round of submissions, followed by a judging period by the ALSC Membership Committee, which will narrow the contest down to ten submissions (if necessary). From the ten submissions, members and non-members will vote for their favorite. The member with the top vote-getting submission will win a Nook and a Book from the Friends of ALSC. Two runners-up will receive an ALSC gift bag with ALSC swag.
What are the dates for submission?
First Round: Tuesday, July 24 – Friday, August 24
Members submit their ideas in an email. Submissions can be images and text or text only. Membership Committee will narrow down the top ten submissions (if necessary).
Second Round: Saturday, August 25 – Thursday, August 30
Members will vote on the top ten ribbon design submissions via the ALSC Blog. The ribbon with the highest vote will win the Book and a Nook from ALSC.
Winners Announced on Friday, August 31
The winner of the competition will be announced in a press release and will have their picture on the ALSC Facebook competition. ALSC can choose whether or not to produce the ribbon.
What are we looking for?
ALSC is looking for a visual representation of ALSC. We would like a ribbon that captures our spirit, who we are, what we do, or what we stand for. It can be a slogan or an image or a combination of the two. It can be flashy or simple. YALSA has a ribbon with an image of a star and the slogan “Rock Star!” ASCLA has several ribbons, including “I Serve Youth in Custody” and “Deaf Cultures @Your Library”. What is fresh, appealing and expresses the spirit of ALSC? We want your ideas!
An “ALSC Member” ribbon with the ALSC logo already exists. With this contest we are seeking a totally new ribbon representing the themes, enthusiasm, or attitude of ALSC members. This is your chance to create the winning design!
What is the criteria for the contest?
Artistic ability is not a requirement. Ideas expressed in written detail will be considered.
Each entry must describe, in 100 words or less, how the badge captures the spirit of ALSC members.
Entries will be judged in the areas of:
1. Creativity and originality
2. Clarity of message
3. Appropriateness & overall representation of ALSC
Entries will receive a score from 1 - 5 in each area. The entries with the highest overall scores will be voted upon by the ALSC membership. May the best design win!
Reminder: Please submit your design to Dan Rude, drude@ala.org by 11:59 PM CST on Friday, August 24, 2012.
