Basic Storytime Development

Not all storytime presenters have the opportunity get professional instruction in developing and implementing storytimes. This webinar will focus on developing a basic preschool storytime (ages 3-5) from deciding on a theme or no theme, choosing books, choosing extension activities, and developing early literacy messaging for caregivers. Get the basics so you can feel confident in creating storytimes!

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will acquire the steps to creating a basic preschool storytime plan.
  • Participants will learn resources to help in storytime planning.
  • Participants will feel more confident in performing storytimes for preschool kids.

Who Should Attend

The target audiences for this program include librarians working in youth/young adult services and students enrolled in MLS/MLIS programs.


Sarah Wethern is the youth librarian at the Douglas County Library in Alexandria, Minnesota. She has provided storytimes for eight years at both the preschool and baby and toddler level. She has served on several ALSC committees including Quicklists and ALSC's Managing Children's Services committee.
