Origin

The first price indexes were published by a standing committee of the Acquisitions Section of the ALA Resources and Technical Services Division (RTSD) in 1959 where they appeared in Library Journal.  In 1965, the name of the committee was changed to Library Materials Price Index Committee (LMPIC) of the Resources and Technical Services Division of the American Library Association.

Following their initial appearance in Library Journal, the price indexes were published in The Bowker Annual. This publication was renamed The Library and Book Trade Almanac beginning with the publication of the 2008 53rd edition.  Beginning with the 2002, 47th edition, the Almanac has been published by Information Today, Inc.  Prior to this it had been a publication of R. R. Bowker.

The ALA ALCTS Library Materials Price Index Committee became an Association level committee approved by the ALCTS Board in 1991. The first publication by the committee under its new auspices was the price data appearing in the Library and Book Trade Almanac, 35th edition, 1990–91. In 2002, the Library Materials Price Index Committee became a subcommittee of the ALCTS Publications Committee. The name of the subcommittee was changed in 2004 to Library Materials Price Index Editorial Board to better reflect its purpose and charge.

Get Involved

ALA values committed and active committee members. From time to time, the LMPI Editorial Board solicits members to volunteer to serve on LMPI as compilers for its indexes. Members must have an interest in the work of the committee; be able to attend Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings to participate in the meetings and activities of the committee; and be able to work between conferences via e-mail and ALA Connect. Express your interest in serving on this or other committees by filling out an application form. Appointments take place when vacancies occur. Committee service usually begins following Annual Conference, about July 1.
