CC:DA consists of 9 voting members, 12 non-voting ALA liaisons, 15 non-voting non-ALA liaisons, 2 interns, 1 webmaster and 6 non-voting ex oficio representatives from the following organizations: The Joint Steering Committee for the Development of RDA (JSC), the Library of Congress (LC), the Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information Committee (MARBI), OCLC, and ALCTS (appointed from CaMMS) serving 2 year terms and led by a Chair.
CC:DA was formally established in 1979, under the aegis of the Cataloging and Classification Section, itself under Resources and Technical Services Division, the precursor to ALCTS. It draws from a long history of committees addressing cataloging codes and rules, including the Catalog Code Revision Committee, the Descriptive Cataloging Committee, and the Subcommittee on Rules for Cataloging Machine-Readable Data Files. As part of its standing charge encompassing the state of descriptive cataloging, CC:DA was the conduit for ALA input on revision to AACR2, but in 2004 efforts shifted to addressing RDA. CC:DA has historically reviewed and addressed other international codes concerning descriptive cataloging.
