Recording RDA Elements in MARC 21 Fields in Name Authority Records

RDA: Resource, Description & Access contains instructions for recording FRAD attributes (called elements in RDA) for persons, families, and corporate bodies in name authority records. The MARC 21 Format for Authority Data was enhanced with new or redefined fields to accommodate these instructions and most have been in use since October of 2010. This webinar will focus on the use of these new fields in RDA authority records and will present best practices for providing that information in MARC-based name authority records.

Learning Outcomes

Attendees will walk away with best practice guidelines as applied at the national cataloging level for adding the new MARC fields to RDA and AACR2 authority records.

Who Should Attend

All librarians that interact with authority records with a desire to learn more about the new attributes/elements being added to name authority records.  Specifically, the webinar will appeal to all AACR2 and RDA catalogers that create or interact with name authority records either at the local system level or when working with records from the LC/NACO Authority File. 

Presenter

Ana Lupe Cristán is a policy specialist in cooperative cataloging programs at the Library of Congress’ Policy and Standards Division (PSD). She has worked at the Library of Congress since 1984 and since 1992 has presented workshops on MARC 21 and on the creation of authority records for contribution to the NACO component of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. She joined the staff in PSD in 2004 and is a member of the team that contributes to the development and maintenance of RDA: Resource, Description & Access.
