The Foreign Book Dealers Directory, an ALCTS Acquisitions Section Publications Committee project which had its online genesis more than ten years ago, has been enhanced to improve its use.

The online directory, which can be viewed and searched was created to help libraries find booksellers in more obscure parts of the world. It includes book and serial vendors who provide materials published in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the countries that comprise the former Soviet Union.

Europe, North America and Latin America are excluded, the latter because of the fine directory produced by Seminar on the Acquisitions of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM).

Recent enhancements include:

  • The searching interface appears on every page; the directory can be searched by company name, country where materials are published, or broader geographic region.
  • Where there are multiple fields for a company’s name, all terms in those fields are indexed.
  • Contact names for suppliers who include them are now visible.
  • The Feedback page has been enhanced so that comments received will now include the e-mail address of the person submitting them. This helps the editor in cases where she needs to correspond about the suggestions.

This directory will remain useful and vibrant only by being used. Please make use of it in your acquisitions and collection development activities and send us updates and corrections as you discover discrepancies, errors, and dated information that needs to be changed. We also welcome comments of a more general nature about the directory.
