The Place to Go When You Need to Know

My library has undertaken large scale marketing and branding campaign, including a slogan, which I have used for the title of this column. This slogan could very well be used for ALCTS. As I read the program, committee, and interest group reports from the 2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver, I was struck by how much of the information is directly applicable to my current professional needs.

I noted in an earlier column that I now oversee Technical Services at Rutgers University Libraries, a department created from the merger of Acquisitions and Cataloging and Metadata services. When I served as head of Cataloging and Metadata Services, my concerns were related to cataloging, RDA implementation, cataloging standards, and workflows. In my new capacity, my concerns have grown to include approval plans, vendors and services, e-books approval plans, and patron-initiated acquisitions (just to cite a few). ALCTS has provided numerous resources to guide me in my work, ranging from conferences, publications, webinars, and online classes.

I am proud to belong to an organization composed of professional staff and engaged members who are so responsive to the needs of our profession, and who produces timely programs and resources. This issue of ANO includes the program, committee, and interest group reports from the 2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting. Read and enjoy! In addition to the reports, see the 2009 election information, which includes information on the candidates for ALA President and the roster for ALCTS officers. The elections begin soon, and our goal is to give you information to make informed choices
