Letters from ALCTS
From the President
Rosann V. Bazirjian, ALCTS President
I would like to inform you of the many wonderful and diverse opportunities that ALCTS offers to its members for service, leadership, scholarship and networking. As you may know, there are numerous committee opportunities available. We see many of you at the Volunteer Forum when section and division leaders discuss the committee appointment process and the available opportunities. Opportunities include committees, subcommittees, task forces, interest groups, and ALCTS representatives serve as liaisons to many ALA groups. The very exciting 50th anniversary of ALCTS celebration is coming up at ALA Annual in Washington, D.C. in 2007. This will be an exciting time, and there are a multitude of subcommittees being formed to make the event truly memorable. If you are interested in participating in the planning, please contact Olivia Madison, Chair of the 50th Anniversary Committee.
There are additional ways to become involved with ALCTS. Scholarship opportunities are available. For example, if you like to write, the division has an active publications program. The Publications Committee shepherds authors writing through the process and will often encourage ALCTS program and pre-conference speakers to publish their presentations as papers. Write a report, book, directory, checklist, bibliography, short article or be a program reporter; we welcome your scholarship. The Publications Committee, chaired by Narda Tafuri, invites your suggestions.
ALCTS is also committed to offering continuing education opportunities. If you have ideas for educational programs or pre-conferences, let us know. Continuing education can be on-site or online, and is matter of which best suits a topic and instructor's skills. We offer workshops, Web courses, webinars and podcasts. However delivered, it is an important part of ALCTS and we want to see our offerings grow in number. Finally, I urge you to come to our Membership Reception at Annual--meet your colleagues, network with old and new friends, share ideas, and find the many opportunities that await you!
