Digital Libraries à la Carte: Choices for the Future

The Tilburg Innovation Centre for Electronic Resources—Ticer School (known for its former International Summer School on the Digital Library)—announces a brand new, modular course for librarians and publishers, “Digital Libraries à la Carte: Choices for the Future.” The course will be held at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, August 21–26, 2005. From its “menu” of five one-day modules, you can select one or more choices:
  • trends and strategic issues
  • technological developments, relevant to libraries
  • consortia and licensing
  • Open Access and institutional repositories
  • the role of libraries in teaching and learning
Top speakers will present their views. Among those to participate are:
  • Marissa Mayer, Director, Consumer Web Products at Google;
  • Derk Haank, CEO of Springer and former CEO of Elsevier;
  • Peter Suber, Open Access Project Director, Public Knowledge, Washington, D.C., and Research Professor of Philosophy, Earlham College;
  • Jenny Levine, whose blog (theshiftedlibrarian.com) is read by thousands of librarians;
  • Carol Tenopir, Professor of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences;
  • Deb deBruijn, Executive Director, Canadian Research Knowledge Network;
  • Gerry McKiernan, Associate Professor and Science and Technology Librarian/Bibliographer, Iowa State University Library;
  • Steven Gilbert, president of The TLT Group and an expert on learning landscapes; and
  • Pat Maughan, transformer of the undergraduate curriculum at the prestigious UC Berkeley to include information literacy training
To guarantee a highly interactive programme, the number of participants is limited to 45 per module. Lectures contain an interactive component, and two modules will conclude with a practical workshop. The course is recommended by the Joint Information Systems Committee, the Digital Academic Repositories (DARE) project, and SURF Diensten.
