Call for Basic Subject Cataloging Trainers

A new course on Basic Subject Cataloging using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) is being developed as a joint effort of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging Standing Committee on Training (PCC SCT) and the Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS). This 2-day course covers basic subject analysis principles and tools and provides training in the application of Library of Congress subject headings and subdivisions. It will be presented as a preconference at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Orlando in June 2004 and available for general release by fall 2004.

The course follows the model of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) in which standardized training materials are developed and experienced catalogers are trained to present the material. Trainers work with workshop sponsors to set dates and all expenses are paid by the sponsors. Honoraria are given at the discretion of the sponsor.

A train-the-trainer session will be held May 5, 2004 in Washington, D.C. This will be a one-day session in which trainers will become familiar with the course content and presentation and delivery techniques. There is no cost for the training or the materials but trainees are responsible for paying their own expenses.

Requirements:

• A minimum of 3 years cataloging experience; thorough understanding of the principles and application of Library of Congress Subject Headings.
• Experience in training, such as SCCTP workshops, NACO or BIBCO training, other cataloging-related workshops, or significant in-house training.
• Support of your institution in providing your expenses to attend the training session and in providing paid leave of absence for you to give two workshops a year. The number actually given may vary, depending on demand and the availability of a trainer.

All others: Send an email to Lori Robare ( lrobare@darkwing.uoregon.edu) with the following information:

1. Your name, title, mailing and email addresses, and telephone and fax numbers.
2. A brief description of your cataloging experience involving LCSH and your experience with providing cataloging training.
3. Names of three references who can attest to your cataloging experience and training ability.

Please send in applications or expressions of interest by March 9. Confirmations will be sent out beginning March 16. A maximum of 20 people in the session may limit acceptance.
