VISION

ALCTS envisions an environment in which traditional library roles are evolving.  New technologies are making information more fluid and raising expectations.  The public needs quality information anytime, anyplace.  ALCTS provides frameworks to meet these information needs.

MISSION

ALCTS provides leadership to the library and information communities in developing principles, standards, and best practices for creating, collecting, organizing, delivering, and preserving information resources in all forms.  It provides this leadership through its members by fostering educational, research, and professional service opportunities.  ALCTS is committed to quality information, universal access, collaboration, and life-long learning.

GOALS

GOAL 1. STANDARDS.

DEVELOP, EVALUATE, REVISE, AND PROMOTE STANDARDS FOR CREATING, COLLECTING, ORGANIZING, DELIVERING, AND PRESERVING INFORMATION RESOURCES IN ALL FORMS.

Objective 1. Monitor need for new library and information standards.

Objective 2. Develop and maintain effective mechanisms for standards distribution, discussion, and comment, to ensure their regular review and timely revision.

Objective 3. Promote international standards development and evaluation by influencing and collaborating with library and information standards groups (e.g., ASTM).

Objective 4. Promote broadest possible application and use of adopted standards, including ongoing compliance assessment.

GOAL 2. BEST PRACTICES.

RESEARCH, DEVELOP, EVALUATE, AND IMPLEMENT BEST PRACTICES FOR CREATING, COLLECTING, ORGANIZING, DELIVERING, AND PRESERVING INFORMATION RESOURCES IN ALL FORMS.

Objective 1. Sponsor programs and open forums to encourage collaboration and discussion of practices and problems.

Objective 2. Evaluate and document practices, identifying areas where methodologies are obsolete or dysfunctional.

Objective 3. Encourage and recognize innovation and motivate practitioners to adopt new and improved practices.

Objective 4. Foster experimentation.

GOAL 3. EDUCATION.

ASSESS THE NEED FOR, SPONSOR, DEVELOP, ADMINISTER, AND PROMOTE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES FOR LIFE-LONG LEARNING.

Objective 1. Develop a mechanism for continuously surveying members' educational needs.

Objective 2. Develop effectiveness measures for assessing current and proposed educational programs.

Objective 3. Develop and continuously evaluate a suite of economically viable educational programs, including "tracks" of programs offered at regular intervals.

Objective 4. In collaboration with L/IS academic colleagues, develop continuing education curricula and identify incentives for their delivery.

Objective 5. Develop a suite of training materials and services, including a "train the trainer" program.

GOAL 4. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP, PUBLICATION, AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICE.

Objective 1. Survey the membership to determine needs and identify program gaps.

Objective 2. Develop and maintain mentoring programs.

Objective 3. Recommend career level benchmarks with associated competencies in order to reach and grow early career librarians.

Objective 4. Coordinate with other divisions to plan programs on timely subjects.

Objective 5. Create and publicize opportunities for research, publication, service, and for informal interchange.

Objective 6. Target professional development opportunities to non-members with a view toward their becoming members.

GOAL 5. INTERACTION AND INFORMATION EXCHANGE.

CREATE OPPORTUNITIES TO INTERACT AND EXCHANGE INFORMATION WITH OTHERS IN THE LIBRARY AND INFORMATION COMMUNITIES.

Objective 1. Review the role and performance of discussion groups.

Objective 2. Provide a range of venues for informal interaction at conferences.

Objective 3. Promote the use of technology to increase communication between conferences.

Objective 4. Encourage ALCTS committees to actively seek opportunities to co-sponsor educational events and pepare publications with committees in other library or information industry organizations.

Objective 5. Promote inter-organizational discussion lists on hot topics that cross various library and information industry communities.

GOAL 6. ASSOCIATION OPERATIONS.

ENSURE EFFICIENT USE OF ASSOCIATION RESOURCES AND EFFECTIVE DELIVERY OF MEMBER SERVICES.

Objective 1. Assess the service needs of members and potential members.

Objective 2. Review and evaluate Association operations.

Objective 3. Using the Association’s Financial Plan, monitor and evaluate the Association’s allocation and expenditure of resources.

Objective 4. Identify and promote sponsorship opportunities for Assoication programs and preconferences.

Objective 5. Improve methods by which Association officers are made aware of their responsibilities and the accountability structures of the Association.

Objective 6. Evaluate Web access to the Association’s documentation.
