Quick and Easy Guide to the Office for Intellectual Freedom's Pages

Welcome to the Web site of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom!

Quick and Easy Links is a page with a combo box with five options:

  • Basic ALA Policies
  • Intellectual Freedom Basics
  • Censorship Pages
  • Privacy Pages
  • USA PATRIOT Act

Look on this page first for quick and easy access to the OIF pages.  Below is the full explanation on how to find material on the OIF Web site:

The Office for Intellectual Freedom is found by

  • Clicking "Our Association" on the top-level navigation bar of the ALA Home Page;
  • Clicking "Offices" on the left-hand navigation bar; and
  • Clicking "Intellectual Freedom" under that heading.

The Office for Intellectual Freedom's pages are found under 11 headings:

  • Basics
  • First Amendment
  • Statements and Policies
  • Intellectual Freedom Toolkits
  • Challenge Support
  • Intellectual Freedom Issues
  • Banned Books Week
  • For Young People
  • IF Groups and Committees
  • Programs and Events
  • About Us

The "outline" below replicates the left-hand navigation bar for the Office for Intellectual Freedom. This "Quick and Easy Guide" was created to show you what is found under each of these headings. To visit these pages, please use the left-hand navigation bar.  By clicking each heading and subheading, you obtain a "breadcrumb" trail, such as Home ---> Our Association ---> Offices ---> Intellectual Freedom ---> Statements and Policies ---> Other Policies and Guidelines, or Home ---> Our Association ---> Offices ---> Intellectual Freedom ---> Statements and Policies ---> Library Bill of Rights ---> Interpretations, so you can find your way back home.

Three time-saving notes:

  • For the IFC (and IFRT, FTRF, and Merritt), ". . . In Action" pages are comprised of links to pages related to a group's activities. For example, under "Intellectual Freedom Committee" (under "IF Groups and Committees), there is a page titled "IFC in Action." In this example, "In Action" pages are comprised of IFC activities.
  • ALA intellectual freedom policies are found under several headings and subheadings; primarily, "Basics"; "Statements and Policies," including "Library Bill of Rights," "Interpretations of the Library Bill of Rights," "Freedom to Read Statement," "Freedom to View Statement," "Libraries: An American Value," "IF Resolutions," and "Other Policies and Guidelines"; and "Challenge Support ---> Dealing with Challenges."
  • Information on the "Intellectual Freedom Manual" can be found under "Intellectual Freedom Toolkits," since it is the "original" intellectual freedom toolkit. Look here soon for the forthcoming "Privacy Tool Kit." Until then, visit "Privacy and Confidentiality" under "Intellectual Freedom Issues."
