Creating Accessible Library Materials

In addition to acquiring collections, librarians often prepare and distribute educational and informational materials for patrons. Librarians should ensure that the materials they prepare are accessible. The following is a list of tips for making library materials accessible:

  • Offer Braille versions of print materials – documents may be translated into Braille through organizations such as American Printing House for the Blind.
  • Provide a digital version of the materials on a CD-ROM.
  • Prepare the materials in an accessible format such as ASCII, Daisy, or HTML.
  • If relying on PDF files, make sure to follow Adobe's accessible PDF guidelines.
  • Provide text descriptions of all graphical and auditory information contained in the documents.
  • Use high resolution, digital graphical images.
  • Ensure that textual information is not contained in image or graphical files.
