The ALA Planned Giving Program - Remembering ALA in Your Will
In response to member requests and ongoing funding needs, the Planned Giving Program was established to provide for the future of ALA. Through the program, ALA hopes to assist donors in planning their financial futures to achieve the maximum benefits for themselves, their families and ALA.
Why Plan a gift for ALA?
Many ALA members spend their lives passionately involved in the library community, and may find that including ALA in their estate plan is the best way to carry on this life-long commitment. Since planned giving is a tool for expressing your beliefs and values, it is possible to support the ALA division, project or initiative of your greatest interest. Often, making a planned gift can provide tax or life income advantages as well.
How to Make a Bequest to ALA
Naming ALA as the beneficiary of a charitable bequest is often as simple as adding a few sentences to your will. Before making any kind of planned gift, you should consult with your attorney or financial advisor.
The following is suggested language for making an unrestricted bequest to ALA. This is the simplest and most common kind of bequest, and will be used to benefit ALA for its general purposes. It is also the most useful to ALA, as it can be used for ALA’s most important needs, which may change from time to time.
Specific Bequest
“I give, devise, and bequeath to the American Library Association of Chicago, Illinois ___% of my estate.”
“I give, devise, and bequeath to the American Library Association of Chicago, Illinois $___.”
Residual Bequest (Remainder of estate after all other bequests have been granted)
“I give, devise, and bequeath to the American Library Association of Chicago, Illinois, all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate after my final expenses and any legal obligations have been settled.”
The ALA Legacy Society
Whether you plan to name ALA in your will or have already done so, please contact the Development Office to let them know of your plans. Doing so will allow ALA to best plan for its future needs, and to recognize you appropriately for your generosity.
With a planned gift, you can become a member of ALA’s Legacy Society, which has been established to recognize our members and friends who have made provisions for ALA through an estate plan. ALA Legacy Society members will receive invitations to events and other gatherings, as well as special recognition during the year to celebrate their important commitment to ALA.
