Committees

Committee appointments are open to any ALA member who belongs to both RUSA and CODES. Meetings are generally open to visitors, and participation is welcomed. We provide a tremendous variety of subjects and issues to stimulate and challenge you.

Executive Committee
To provide leadership, coordination and direction for the Section and to act for and by the authority of the Section during the period between meetings of the Section.

Collection Development Education (CDE)
To further the organization of and education for collection development activities.

Collection Development Policies and Assessment
The Collection Development Policies and Assessment Committee identifies, develops, evaluates, and disseminates information and resources relevant for all library collections; to educate librarians about collection development policies and assessment techniques through publications, programs, discussion groups, and other methods; encourage librarians to establish collection development policies, guidelines, and techniques to evaluate their libraries’ collections; and promote research on methodologies, techniques, instruments, and best practices related to policy development and collection assessment.

Cooperative Collection Development Committee
Joint CODES and STARS committee charged to study, promote, and support cooperative collection development and related user services.

Dartmouth Medal
Awards a medal that honors the creation of a reference work of outstanding quality and significance

Liaison with Users
To build and support the coalitions of librarians responsible for collection development and public services, especially coordinated liaison networks.

Louis Shore/Greenwood Publishing Group Award
To administer a $3,000 annual award to recognize excellence in the reviewing of books and other materials for libraries.

Materials Reviewing
To monitor, encourage, and improve both the process and skills of those librarians who review materials acquired for libraries.

Notable Books Council
To compile an annual list of Notable Books for use by the general reader and librarians who work with adult readers. This list calls attention to books published during the year which are significant additions to the world of books.

Notable Books Council, Publicity Subcommittee
To assist in the arrangement of the Annual Notable Books Breakfast, publicizing the Notable Books List, and related promotion duties.

Publications
To provide advice and recommendations regarding section documents and publications to CODES committees and to the CODES Executive Committee and to facilitate the publication process.

Readers Advisory
To study and review the educational needs, trends, and issues related the development of fiction collections and readers advisory services.

Reference Publishing Advisory (RPAC)
To contribute to the creation and improvement of reference sources through programming and interactions with publishers, vendors, and the library community.

Reference Sources
To select the annual list of Outstanding Reference Sources recommended for small and medium-sized libraries.

Sophie Brody Award
To administer an award to the U.S. author of the most distinguished contribution to Jewish literature (fiction and/or non-fiction) for adults published in the United States in the preceding year.

Wilson Indexes
To study the periodical indexes published by the H.W. Wilson Company. along with prepare questionnaires and voting lists of elected titles that subscribers have submitted.
