Readers Advisory Committee
Purpose:
To consider issues, problems, and trends relative to the development and evaluation of fiction collections and readers advisory services in all types of libraries; to develop guides and guidelines for collection development of fiction collections; to encourage research on fiction collections and their use in libraries; to be a forum for discussion about fiction and readers advisory services in libraries; to identify continuing education needs of librarians working in this area and to disseminate the information to them; to coordinate its work with all relevant ALA committees and sections on matters of mutual concern and interest.

Conference Presentations
At the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, the Reader's Advisory committee sponsored a program entitled "Taking the Guesswork Out of Non-Fiction Readers Advisory." The program was designed to help librarians make non-fiction reading recommendations. Current best practices, tools, and challenges of non-fiction readers’ advisory were discussed. Reading list, titles, sure bet authors, genres, and subject areas were also showcased.
Handouts from this program can be found in the "Related Files" section below. The two handouts from the program are the ones entitled "Sure bet narrative nonfiction writers" and "Narrative nonfiction genre appeal factors."
"Establishing and Promoting Readers’ Advisory in Small and Medium-sized Libraries" was presented at Annual Conference in 2006. See the handout for that program posted in "Related Files" below.
