So you want to be a Reviewer

Any librarians who are (or want to be) reviewers or are interested in the process of reviewing should attend this program. Kathleen Sullivan, a former member of the CODES Materials Reviewing committee, will speak about the new reviewing guidelines that the committee has created. "Elements for Basic Reviews" is now posted on the RUSA CODES website. Barbara Bibel (Oakland Public Library) will speak about her experiences of becoming a reviewer of non-fiction materials. Danise Hoover (Hunter College Library) will speak from the academic librarian's point of view and talk about reviewing fiction. Finally, Brad Hooper from Booklist and Barbara Hoffert from LJ will offer tips on becoming a reviewer and insight into the reviewing world.

Print or Electronic? How to Decide

Speakers from academic and public libraries will discuss how they make choices about print and electronic formats for library resources. When is each format, or a combination of both formats, best for the collection and the clientele? Presenters will cover the factors that small, medium, and large libraries must consider as they weigh print and electronic resource options with limited budgets. This how-to session will cover books, serials, and reference materials.

Literary Tastes: A Notable Books Breakfast

Come and celebrate the most notable writing of our time with a panel of authors from the 2005 Notable Book Council's List for America's Readers. The breakfast will be held on Sunday June 26, 2005 from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It will take place in the Red Lacquer Room at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel. Scheduled to appear are the highly regarded investigative journalist and Pulitzer Prize winning Seymour M. Hersh, author of Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib, the award winning Mark Kurlansky, author of 1968: The Year that Rocked the World, Nathaniel Philbrick, the acclaimed author of Sea of Glory: America's Voyage of Discovery: The U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 and the Director of the Egan Institute of Maritime Studies on Nantucket Island, noted poet and Langston Hughes Medal winning Nikki Giovanni, The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni, 1968-1998, and the new Poet Laureate of the United States and Pulitzer Prize winning, Ted Kooser, author of Delights and Shadows. After breakfast, the authors will be available for book signings and conversations. Come join this not to be missed annual celebration of the best writing of our time. Taking the Guesswork Out of Non-Fiction Readers Advisory

This program is designed to help librarians make non-fiction reading recommendations. Current best practices, tools, and challenges of non-fiction readers’ advisory will be discussed. Reading list, titles, sure bet authors, genres, and subject areas will be showcased. Participants will also have an opportunity to share insights and experiences at moderated table discussions.

Speakers will include Robert Burgin, editor of Nonfiction Readers' Advisory (Libraries Unlimited, 2004) and Neal Wyatt, author of a forthcoming work on nonfiction readers' advisory.
