RUSA Professional Development Online

Important Message from RUSA regarding our continuing Professional Development Online efforts:

April 17, 2008- As part of our efforts to provide better online services, we are migrating all online courses from the older WebCT system to Moodle, which provides greater power and flexibility for our instructors and an easier interface for students.  Please check back for our updated course descriptions and schedules.

RUSA's professional development online efforts include:

  • Genealogy 101 New for 2008! Genealogy 101 is a five-week online course for library students and reference staff providing an introduction to American genealogy reference service. The course will outline basic sources and strategies, centered on a single case study.
  • Reference Interview     Brush up your reference interview skills and learn methods of evaluating reference services with this four-week online course. A “must” for support staff, library technicians, and newly hired reference librarians
  • Business Reference 101   Explore the process of business research and learn about both free and fee-based resources. This course provides the uninitiated or the apprehensive with some of the ins and outs of business reference and lays a foundation for future strength and assurance when dealing with this topic.
  • Readers’ Advisory 101 Learn how to become more comfortable in providing readers’ advisory (RA) services. Through practice sessions, learn how to use RA tools, craft annotations, read in genres, articulate appeal, and experiment with methods to offer RA services.
  • Marketing Basics for Libraries This course will be designed as an introduction to marketing. Rather than focus on theory alone, this course will focus on the use of marketing, explaining basic marketing tenets using the framework of libraries. Five weekly sessions will provide the framework for understanding marketing tenets and resources. The final product of the class will be a marketing plan that individuals will create based on their own library environment/needs.
