100 ALA volunteers aid understaffed,
under-funded Anaheim libraries

(CHICAGO) During this year’s American Library Association (ALA) 2008 Annual Conference, June 26–July 2, 2008, 100 volunteers from across the U.S. will gather for “Libraries Build Communities,” a one-day volunteer effort coordinated by the ALA Chapter Relations Office and the Anaheim Public Library, to take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2008, at various locations in and around Anaheim, Calif.

Volunteers from ALA’s Annual Conference will convene at 8 a.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center and be bused to school and public libraries to illustrate the importance and influence local libraries can have on their communities.

ALA volunteers will participate in 13 projects, including aiding 12 understaffed and underfunded public and school libraries. Besides assisting these libraries in adding new books, volunteers will help a high school archive 115 years of its history, create a puppet show for grades K-4 (8-25 students) at a library serving a children's shelter and update another library’s  20-year-old collection. Volunteers will also help sort and label food at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
