ALA online annual report showcases 2005-2006 achievements and year’s highlights

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has posted on its Web site its online annual report for 2005-2006, covering the year's conferences, partnerships, programs, issues, highlights and more.

“In 2005-2006 ALA actively championed libraries and communities in many ways,” said ALA Executive Director Keith Fiels. “We showed how libraries really do build communities when we decided, just weeks after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, to stick with our plans to hold our 2006 Annual Conference there. We’re proud that nearly 1,000 conference volunteers descended on the city’s public, school and academic libraries for two intensive days of fixing, painting, sorting and rebuilding.

“Throughout the year, we continued to support the damaged libraries as well as to strengthen ALA’s technologies, ongoing education and service to our members. This annual report highlights some of the major achievements of 2005-2006 and illustrates what more than 66,000 members can accomplish when they work together," Fiels added.

The online edition of the annual report follows ALA's fiscal year 2005-2006, from September 1, 2005 to August 31, 2006. The Web-based format allows expanded coverage of ALA and provides extensive information about the year's conferences and workshops, programs and partners, and awards and honors, including winners of the Youth Media Awards.  Other sections present key financial information, the year in review, publishing, highlights from the Washington Office, ALA's organizational structure and leadership, and an appreciation section focusing on Library Champions, supporters, donors, funders and partners.

This is the seventh year the annual report has been available on the Web. It may be found at www.ala.org/annualreport.

The American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world, with more than 66,000 members. Its mission is to promote the highest quality library and information services and public access to information.
