CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Publishing Committee is seeking proposals for Carnegie-Whitney grants. Grants of up to $5000 are for the preparation of print or electronic reading lists, indexes, or other guides to library resources that promote reading or the use of library resources at any type of library.
Funded projects have ranged from popular, general-reader proposals such as “ReadMore,” a reading list for Missouri's state-wide reading program, to more specialized, scholarly proposals such as “Librarianship and Information Science in the Islamic World, 1966–1999: An Annotated Bibliography.”
Applications must be received by November 5, 2006. Recipients will be notified by the end of February 2007.
The Carnegie-Whitney Awards provide grants that are based on a special fund first established by Andrew Carnegie in 1902. The Carnegie Fund was subsequently enhanced by a merger with a fund established by James Lyman Whitney in 1910. The Publishing Committee, a standing committee of the American Library Association, administers the awards.
