ALA Council passes resolution opposing Alito confirmation

(CHICAGO) At the American Library Association (ALA) 2006 Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, January 20-25, the ALA Council adopted a resolution opposing the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. ALA CD#44 states that: "COSWL (the Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship), like AAUW (American Association of University Women), has 'grave concerns' about Alito's nomination."

The 182-member ALA governing body passed ALA CD#44 on January 24, 2005. The resolution specifically cited an American Association of University Women (AAUW) analysis of Alito's record on civil rights issues:

The ALA will communicate its opposition to Alito's confirmation to the U.S. Senate.
