Volunteer Information

Note: The submission form for 2008-2009 volunteers is closed. Check back next fall for 2009-2010.

If you are interested in helping to foster excellence in cultural programming in all types of libraries, you are invited to join the work of the Public Programs Office by volunteering to serve on the Public and Cultural Programs Advisory Committee (PCPAC). The PCPAC is an ALA Committee, and, in accordance with the ALA Handbook of Organization, appointments to the PCPAC are made by the ALA president-elect, who chairs and acts on the advice of the ALA Committee on Appointments. All applicants must complete and submit an online ALA Committee Volunteer Form. Geographic location, type of library, gender, ethnicity, previous committee work (not necessarily with ALA), ALA and related experience, and other factors are considered when committee slates are compiled in order to ensure broad representation and diversity on all committees.

To volunteer for the PCPAC, please complete and submit the ALA Committee Volunteer Form. Use the drop-down box and select "Public and Cultural Programs Advisory."

PCPAC members must be members of ALA and are expected to attend all of the Committee's meetings at both Midwinter Meetings and Annual Conferences during their term on the Committee. Committee appointments are for two years, beginning after Annual Conference. Volunteer forms received by December 3 of each year will be considered for appointment beginning the following summer. Volunteer forms received after this deadline will be held for the following year, or to fill in vacancies as they arise.

Other Public Programs Office Vounteer Opportunities

Besides PCPAC membership, other volunteer opportunities exist. They include ad hoc subcommittees or task forces that the Chair of PCPAC may convene from time to time, Annual Conference PPO Booth volunteers, grant proposal reviewers, and more.

If you are interested in these other ways to become involved with the Public Programs Office, or the PCPAC, contact Deb Robertson, Director, Public Programs Office, droberts@ala.org, 312.280.5057. Please describe your volunteer interests and your background in humanities-related programming, fundraising or grants.
