ALA Midwinter Meeting Media Activity Report

Seattle is the 14th largest market in the country, and proved to be a very strong media market for the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting.  Such issues as teen literacy, the closure of EPA Libraries, technology and how libraries are modern institutions were key topics discussed.

ALA President Leslie Burger and Seattle Public Library Director Deborah L. Jacobs, co-authored an op-ed titled “Libraries thrive in all forms.”   The opinion piece appeared in the January 18 edition of the Post Intelligencer, and discusses how libraries are changing in dynamics. The Seattle Times also ran an editorial on January 19.

Leslie Burger also participated in a lengthy live radio interview with CBS Radio Affiliate KIRO. The interview focused on the conference and the various issues that effect libraries today, like library funding and technology. Other radio coverage included KPLU Seattle’s National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate and KOMO radio.

The Midwinter Meeting’s Youth Media Awards received a flurry of national coverage. Ellen Fader, Association for Library Service to Children past president, appeared on the Today Show with Newbery Medal winner Susan Patron and Caldecott Medal winner David Wiesner. AP National Reporter Hillel Italie wrote about the awards, and his article was picked up by hundreds of papers from around the country. Highly circulated publications like USA Today, New York Times, Time for Kids, Red Book and Costco Connections also provided coverage.

More than 85 members of the media registered for advance media credentials. Registrants included library trade, bloggers and local media.

After a successful pilot, and months of planning, the PIO offered a live Webcast of the ALA Youth Awards. More than 5,000 logged on to view the award announcements. The Webcast took months of preparation and coordination with ALA’s ITTS department, on-site audio/video vendors, and our Web vendor Unikron.

Prior to the Webcast PIO received multiple calls from educators and librarians who planned to use the Webcast as a learning tool. Most held Newbery/Caldecott elections in their classrooms or libraries and wanted to compare their election results to today’s announcement.

Two local authors win awards

Two Puget Sound-area authors – Laura McGee Kvasnosky and Kirby Larson – won major children’s literature awards Monday at the American Library Association Midwinter meeting in Seattle. The awards were revealed to a cheering, whistling crowd of about 1,000 librarians, publishers’ representatives and other book professionals at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center. The Theodor Seuss Geisel Beginning Reader Award went to Kvasnosky, a Seattle author-illustrator, for “Zelda and Ivy: The Runaways,” her fourth book about a funny and spunky pair of fox sisters. Larson, a Kenmore resident and author of “Hattie Big Sky,” won a Newbery Honor, one of three Newbery runners-up picked this year. As a thrilled Kvasnosky accepted hugs and signed books just after the announcements, she said it’s “not often winners get to be in the room when the awards are announced.” The awards are a matter of prestige for authors, and ALA awards help parents
