Hundreds of academic, public, and school libraries throughout the county will participate in National Library Week. Please note that the following list is not a complete inventory of participating libraries. For information regarding National Library Week events taking place in your area, please contact your local library. 


CALIFORNIA

Bruggemeyer Memorial Library

The theme of National Library Week at the Bruggemeyer Memorial Library this
year is "What's the Story@ Your Library."

April 21, 7 p.m.,  "What's the Story@Your Library"
The library will honor its volunteers and announce the winners of the Bookmark/Essay Contest on "What's the Story@Your Library." The essays and bookmarks will be posted in the Friends Room during National Library Week. The Friends of the Library have
furnished the $25 prize for each category in the contest. The winners will read their essays. Following this the library will have its annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.

April 24, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Family Reading Festival
At Starbucks Coffee, 141 N. Atlantic - The library and Starbucks will have a Family Reading Festival. There will be storytelling, balloon art, face painting, Starbucks coffee and pastry samples. Anyone who donates a new or almost new children's book will be entered into a drawing for a free gift.

Santa Monica Public Library
Santa Monica, CA
Santa Monica Public Library will launch "Citywide Reads" during National Library Week. The reading program invites residents and visitors to read the same book concurrently and participate in public book discussion groups and related events.

This year's "Citywide Reads" book selection is "The Berlin Stories" by acclaimed British-American author Christopher Isherwood.  Isherwood lived in Santa Monica from 1939 until his death in 1986. This year's program will celebrate the centennial of Isherwood's birth and give residents the opportunity to celebrate a local literary and cultural figure.

The event provides an opportunity for families to visit the library in a friendly and relaxed environment.  A librarian will be on hand to share a story and song.  No sign-up required.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Washington International School Middle & Upper School Library

Washington International School celebrates National Library Week with a program titled "History versus Hollywood: the Movie Pearl Harbor"

On April 20, students will be invited to watch the movie Pearl Harbor after school in the school's library. Later in the week on April 22, students will be invited back to the library to participate in an after school roundtable discussion with Navy historian and Pearl Harbor movie consultant Jack Green.  Green is also a  Navy Public Affairs
officer, and will be joined by  Navy LCDR Melissa Schuermann, who also consulted on the movie.

The North Miami Public Library has many exciting activities planned for National Library Week. 

April 19-24, 2004, Food For Fines Week
The Food For Fines program offers library patrons a chance to clear their fee records.  The library will be accepting canned foods and dry goods as payment on late fees.  Collected items will be donated to the North Miami Foundation for Senior Citizens for distribution to families in need.
 
April 21, 7 p.m. Banza (The Banjo)
Wednesday night Story Time will feature a Haitian folktale for kids. Making this event even more special are the special guest dignitaries:  the Mayor, City Manager,  and several members of the City Council of the City of North
Miami.  The Mayor, Mr Joe Celestin is a native of Haiti and is the first African-American to be elected Mayor of the City of North Miami.   

April 24, 7 p.m.  Hands On Math & Science
Students are introduced to math and science activities to encourage an appreciation of the sciences.  This program is a cooperative effort of the National Science Foundation, the Dade County Public Schools, the Friends of the North Miami Public Library, and the North Miami Public Library.

Roddenbery Memorial Library

April 20, 4 p.m., Wessie Connell Reception
Roddenbery Memorial Library will host a reception to honor Wessie Connell, librarian and founder of the library in 1939.  The foyer outside the library's auditorium will feature a portrait of the widely loved and respected "Miss Wessie," and a cabinet and wall will display memorabilia from her life and showcase several state and local government proclamations received during her career.  The reception will also serve as a preview venue for the forthcoming legal humor novel "Skinny-Dipping: A Novel of Suspense," by newly published local author and former attorney Claire Matturo.

The Bloomington and Normal Public Libraries' community reading program, "A Tale for Two Cities" will be launched during National Library Week. Everyone in the Twin Cities is being invited to read and discuss the same book at the same time. The title selected for 2004 is "Montana 1948" by Larry Watson.

The highlight of  "A Tale for Two Cities" will be an appearance by author Larry Watson. Watson will speak at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24 at Normal Community High School.

Watson will also meet with the libraries' book discussion groups at 10:30 a.m. April 24 at Chiddix Junior High School.

Patrons who show their Des Plaines Public Library cards at more than 25 participating businesses during National Library Week will receive special values. Cosponsored with the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

April 18, 2 p.m., Performance Poetry
Middle school members of the library-sponsored poetry workshop, "This Way Out," will present a poetry performance. High school members of the library-sponsored poetry workshop, "The Spoken World," will present a poetry performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 25. Presented for National Poetry Month and National Library Week. Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

April 20, 12 p.m., Lunchtime Stories for Adults - Part I of 3
Natalie Newberger will read "The Night of the Iguana" and "Something by Tolstoi," both by Tennessee Williams. Audience members are invited to bring a bag lunch. Coffee will be provided. Stories by Nadine Gordimer will be featured on May 18, and stories by Ernest Hemingway will be featured on June 15.

Using the theme, It's Happening @ Your Library, the Shawnee Mission East High School Library Media Center is scheduling several events for School Library Media Month. On April 1 the librarians will host a staff Book Club discussion about "Under the Banner of Heaven." The following day the library will sell Cappuccinos and cold mocha smoothies to students and staff to raise money for new books.

For two months, the library has been collecting donations for a huge Used Book Sale to be held in conjunction with the Earth Day activities sponsored by the Environmental Club. Proceeds from the sale April 9 -10, will be used to purchase new technology for the Media Center.

KENTUCKY

Western Kentucky University Libraries Bowling Green Public Library

The Southern Kentucky Book Fest partners present the "Kentucky Literary Awards" for excellence in nonfiction, fiction and poetry publications.  The winners in each category will be announced on Friday, April 16, 2004 at Western Kentucky University's Downing Center at noon.  Winners will be given a commemorative certificate and a cash prize of $1,000. Books eligible for the awards must have been written by a Kentucky author or have a Kentucky related theme. 

"The Long Story....Short Writing Contest" invites to read a book and write a short story discussing the book and why they would recommend it.  Short story entries can be no longer than 600 words.  More than one story can be entered, but must be submitted separately. Entries are divided into three categories:  Division I - grades 3 - 5, Division II - grades 6 - 8, and Division III - grades 9 - 12. First and second place winners for each category will be announced at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest, April 16, 2004 at the Sloan Convention Center.

The celebration will take place Friday, April 2, 2004 at Jones Elementary School, a 2003 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence located in Severna Park, Md. 

Governor Ehrlich will read and present to students an autographed copy of "City Zoo Blizzard Revue" by Barbara Crispin, a Maryland author and librarian at the Anne Arundel County Public Library, who will be meeting with students throughout the day with her illustrator Roswitha Houghton, as they discuss writing, illustrating, and the publishing process with students, all part of a school-wide project in which students will research, write, and illustrate their own books.

High school and Jr. high school readers are visiting Elmwood School to give reading incentive prizes to k - 3rd grade youngsters that are "caught" reading.  Teen students will be handing out stickers, pencils and coloring pages about reading topics; and will also read stories in classrooms.  The goal is for Teen students to be positive role models, and to show that reading is a cool thing to do when you are older. The Somerset County Library System will hold a Food For Fines campaign to celebrate National Library Week and to assist local food banks.

During National Library Week, April 18 - 24, all Somerset County Library System branches invite patrons to donate non-perishable food items in lieu of paying their library late fines. Each donated item will waive up to $1.00 in library late fines. The donation only applies to materials that have been returned; lost items cannot be paid for with this donation.

All of the donated food will be distributed to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County and The Hillsborough Food Bank.

To Celebrate National Library Week April 18-24, 2004, all week kids are welcome to visit the library and design a quilt square-keeping in mind our NEW logo- Your Window to the World...young artists will be asked to decorate a square showing what they see through books and stories.  These squares will be sewn together to create a wall hanging for the NEW Story Time room in the NEW building. Children will sign their squares as a remembrance for years to come.

TheClermont County (Ohio) Public Library is conducting a community awareness campaign during National Library Week 2004. Monday April 19-Saturday April 24 each patron will be asked to "Check Out Your Savings" by borrowing materials from the library rather than purchasing them from a store. At each check out library staff will present each patron with an itemized bookmark indicating that patron's total savings for the day.  Each library branch will post charts indicating how much their community has saved all week by utilizing the library.

The Cupeyville School High School Information Center will be hosting an activity called "The Backyard" during National Library Week. The event will be hosted behind the Information Center.  The event will attract more students to the school library; raise funds for the Information Center; and will give library staff an opportunity to showcase the many informational resources available to students. 

During the event students will have an opportunity to watch films and various TV programs, as well as view the library's book and magazine collections. Snacks and refreshments will be sold, and live music will be provided by the school's band.

The Bates Technical College Library, in partnership with the Bates Technical College Child Care Center and the Tacoma Public Library, will celebrate National Library Week and the Week of the Young Child with a multicultural storytelling event and several Read Around the World displays throughout the campus.

Join us for a multicultural storytelling event on Wednesday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m., when professional storyteller, and Tacoma Public librarian, Laura Shomshak will tell tales for all ages from around the world.  Ms. Shomshak has been a storyteller and children's librarian for over 20 years.  She has shared her knowledge and expertise with countless parenting groups; has conducted workshops in puppetry; and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Washington.

This event is free and open to the public.

While on campus, you are invited to view the artwork of the children from the Child Care Center that will adorn the hallways.

The library will kick off National Library Week celebrations early with a three-day "Spring Into a Good Book" sale. The sale will be held April 8-10 at the South Salt Lake Community Center, which also houses Columbus Library, one of Salt Lake County's 18 branch libraries.

During National Library Week, an automated PC management system will be introduced at the county's Whitmore Library. A new library card, called the Lynx Card, will enable patrons to reserve computers, track usage time, check out materials and choose either filtered or unfiltered Internet access. The County Library Lynx, Salt Lake County Libraries' life-sized mascot, and local dignitaries will be on hand for the event. PC management will be implemented at all Salt Lake County Libraries in the upcoming months.
