Statement of Role, Purpose, and Function
The ISLD serves as a clearinghouse of sustainable community-based library projects in developing areas of the world. This group mobilizes the power of ALA librarians to raise awareness of and make significant contributions to international library development. Librarians in developing countries can tap into resources for training and projects in their libraries.
ISLD Lunch at ALA Annual in Chicago
Description: ISLD and returned Peace Corps librarians meet on Saturday for lunch during the ALA annual and midwinter and guests are welcome to attend.

Directions: The Russian Tea Time Restaurant is located in the Loop, south of the Chicago River, on Adams Street right off Michigan Avenue. Across the street is the Art Institute Museum of Chicago, around the corner - Chicago Symphony Orchestra, two blocks south - Auditorium Theater. Millennium Park is just two blocks north, Sears Tower - six blocks west on the same street.
You’ll sample a variety of Russian dishes including potato pancakes, stuffed mushrooms, carrot salad, beet caviar, stuffed eggplant, lamb samsa and more. Cost of the lunch is $19.50. Please plan to pay with cash. Please RSVP by July 6 to Connie Champlin - cjchamp@mac.com.

Yes We Can: Support International Sustainable Library Development
Date: Monday, July 13, 2009 Time: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Place: McCormick Place West (MCP) - W-181 Description: This program presented ways that skills are developed and transferred to enable sustainability in developing libraries. Methods to overcome contraints such as bandwidth, cultural awareness, needs assessment, and language barriers were presented. (Program sponsored by the International Sustainable Library Development-ISLD)

2007 ISLD Program at ALA Annual in Washington DC
Opportunities to Participate in Global Library Development (ISLD) Interest Group
Description: The IRRT's International Sustainable Library Development (ISLD) Interest Group presented an interactive program on "Opportunities to Participate in Global Library Development." From becoming a Peace Corps volunteer to organizing a program in your library, there are a wide range of opportunities to participate in global library development. Speakers introduced attendees to some of these possibilities, including a project to build libraries for street kids and other children affected by HIV/AIDS in Lusaka, Zambia, public library development in Rwanda, Peace Corps volunteer library projects and the Global Libraries Outreach Campaign focused on public libraries throughout the world. Following the presentations, attendees discussed these and additional projects that welcomed participation.
